3D Trip Planning

Planning a trip can be very difficult when there is a lack of information for an area. In most cases, these routes are usually remote and most likely have unknown geological obstacles. Obstacles may include cliffs, large ravines, or even mountain ranges. No matter the obstacle, they can cause serious problems when finding safe routes and maintaining a schedule. Just imagine coming to a 200-meter cliff with a 10-kilometer detour a day before your floatplane is to arrive.

On the image below it is easy to pick out the ridgelines and and valleys. 3D trip planning is used in combination with Digital Elevation Modeling to create 3D maps. With 3D mapping you can find most types of obstructions on a computer screen. Some features are harder to find than others, but knowing there might be a problem allows for some advanced route planning.

The route can be uploaded to a GPS unit after it has been planned. See the GPS page for more details.
