Using software in combination with maps, GPS data can be overlayed on a map to produce a custom map showing waypoint, tracks, and routes. Additionally, maps can be used to plan waypoints, tracks, routes. This information is uploaded to the GPS for use in the field. Detailed trip planning and mapping reduces any possibilities of errors in navigation. Often maps are very limited in detail for many recreational areas of Alberta, and producing your own is required.
